How to treat road rash

As a bicyclist or motorcyclist, you know one thing to be true: Falling to the pavement can cause a variety of injuries, including road rash.

Not only does road rash hurt, but if left untreated it can lead to a variety of other health concerns in the future, such as scarring.

Here are some treatment tips to follow:

  • Wash the wound as soon as possible. For example, you may be able to rinse the wound with your drinking water.
  • Dress your wound. This depends on the severity of the road rash, so don’t hesitate to seek medical attention if you don’t know what you are doing.
  • Keep an eye on your wound. Your wound should improve with each passing day. If this doesn’t happen for any reason, it could be infected.
  • Reduce scarring. While this isn’t a big deal to everyone, most people want to prevent or reduce scarring if possible. There are many ways of doing so, such as by using moisturizer to promote healing.

These are just some of the many steps you can take to treat road rash.

If you suffer this injury along with others, such as a broken bone, you should absolutely receive immediate medical attention.

In the event that another person was responsible for your accident, such as the motorist that struck your bike, you should also learn more about your legal rights. You may be able to take action, such as by filing a lawsuit, with the idea of receiving compensation. This may be the best way to get your life back on track after a serious accident.
