A July 14 crash between a motorcycle and a vehicle has left one woman injured and another facing drunk driving charges. According to reports, the motorcycle accident took place just before 10 p.m. at the intersection of South Service Road and Albert Street. A 40-year-old woman was reportedly behind the wheel of the vehicle and had a blood-alcohol level higher than the legal limit at the time of crash. It was not clear from initial reports what caused the crash or whether the 40-year-old woman suffered any injuries.

She was charged with driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 0.08 and impaired driving causing bodily harm. An initial court appearance was scheduled for July 15, and the woman was released on bail until the next court date.

The motorcycle rider involved in the crash suffered severe bruises as well as a broken collarbone and ankle but was back at home and expected to recover. According to reports, the woman was identified as the president of the Riders Against Government Exploitation motorcycle organization.

Because of the relative lack of protection in the case of a motorcycle accident, the victim’s injuries are often severe. In situations like these, recovery can be a long and challenging process, involving missed time from work, costly medical expenses and long-term rehabilitation therapy. If another party is found at fault — for distracted driving or failure to yield, for example — the victim may be able to file a civil suit seeking compensation from the courts.
